Facteurs environnementaux déterminants des communautés d’invertébrés et de macrophytes des petits plans d’eau peu profonds de France continentale

Abstract : Small shallow lakes (SSL) are ecosystems potentially with high conservation value, and providing many ecosystem services. However, unlike the large lakes, they do not have rigorous protocols to assess their biological integrity or their conservation value. Indeed, their functioning and the communities they shelter remain largely unknown. Two new sampling protocols are proposed, one on macrophytes, the other on invertebrates. These two biological groups are essential for the functioning of SSLs. Macrophytes are at the core of many feedback loops ensuring a clear state and high biodiversity, whereas invertebrates help maintain the clear state and dominate the exchanges of matter and energy. From the sampling of nearly 300 SSLs from metropolitan France, the environmental factors that determine the communities of macrophytes and invertebrates have been identified. These two biological groups are primarily determined by climate with elevation, water mineralization and pH, distance from source, and area. For invertebrates, fish are also determinant. The differences in sensitivities to these factors between invertebrates and macrophytes seem to be governed in particular by their different dispersal capacities. These results can be useful for regional and local policies for the conservation of the biodiversity of SSLs.
