L'environnement sensible dans les musées à caractère ethnologique : Approche interdisciplinaire des ambiances muséales

Abstract : This research interrogates the perception, the memory and the representations of the atmospheres (ambiances in French) in the ethnological museums. The general assumption is the following : The analysis of the perception of the atmospheres in a restricted and controllable site like the museums exhibition, contributes to the knowledge of the procedures of perception and memory of the built environment. There is an analogy between the actual procedures of the museography and the urban and atmosphere's conception. The actors are of the same type but there are three inferences : the conception's intentions are simpler and accented at the same time ; the atmosphere's conception can be more emphatic, as far as it concerns the choice of the components ; the user is a visitor from whom we explicitly apeal to his perceptive activity. Consequently, there are two questions which are posed: 1 ) · How do designers concieve the atmospheres and how do they integrate the visitor's experience in their conception? 2) How do visitors perceive the atmospheres and which memories do they keep from them? A multidisciplinary methodological approach in situ allows us to answer to these questions: 1 ) 1be ethnographical observation of the conception' s procedure and setting up of an exhibition, enables not only the comprehension of the negociations' mechanisms between the actors, but also the identification of their intentions and social representations. 2) The method of the commented circuit (parcours commentés in French) permits to reveal the relation between the sensible environment and the perceptive experience of the visitor. Equally, it points up the visitor' s competence. The results of the research's theoretical part contribute at the conception's and perception's problematics of the atmospheres. As far as it concerns the practical part, the elaboration of a typology of museal ambients will permit the integration of the sensitive dimensions to the conception of the museal public spaces.
