Rhéoépaississement de systèmes auto-associatifs de la famille CnTAB

Abstract : The dilute solutions of surfactant are composed with micelles which have various forms mainly cylindrical free or having a low entangled. Under shear flow, the behavior of these solutions is shear thickening "increase of the viscosity." This phenomenon is related to the formation of a new shear induced structure (SIS). The main aim of this work is to study the shear thickening of four systems, while varying in a controlled manner dimensions micelles by the change in the length of the aliphatic chain.
During this work, the systems used belong to the family of CnTAB (C12-, C14-, C16- and C18TAB). We conducted a comparison of the results: rheometry, rheo-optical, ultrasound velocimetry and small angle neutron scattering.
A description of the shape and dimensions of micelles present in equilibrium was given as function of the chain length. Under flow, it was found that the dimensions of the micelles are large and easily adjustable to low shears when the aliphatic chain is long. In the shear thickening transition, the induced structure is totally oriented in the flow direction. At high shear rate, the systems have similar rheological behavior, as well as the structure remains oriented. On the basis of our results and those of earlier work, we have proposed a model describing micellar transitions forms related to the macroscopic behaviour.
