Abstract : In order to cope with the growing competition in their markets, SMEs are increasingly integrating collaborative innovation networks (CINs). Indeed, these networks enable them to access to the complementary knowledge needed to carry out their innovative projects. The contribution of an SME to such a network requires an absorption of external knowledge brought by the other participants of the network and eventually deriving from sources that are external to the constituted network. The aim of this thesis is to construct a maturity tool to assess the absorptive capacity of SMEs integrated in such contexts. This evaluation will help them to effectively contribute to the network and thus would foster the success of the innovation. It will also guide them towards the appropriate practices in order to capitalize on their experiences within the CINs and improve the performance of their own organizations accordingly. A mixed methodological approach has been adopted for the development of this tool. A first qualitative phase enabled the identification of the absorption practices of an SME embedded in a CIN. This phase mainly consists of an in-depth literature review, 20 semi-directive interviews in 3 cases of CINs, in the Rhône-Alpes region of France and the Yorkshire region in the United Kingdom and two working sessions with researchers and practitioners. A second quantitative phase aimed to determine the relevance of these practices according to the context of an SME's participation to a CIN. In this regard, a questionnaire was first tested with 2 practitioners and 2 researchers and then administered to SMEs operating in similar network contexts. The collected data were analyzed using a PLS-SEM approach and allowed to formulate, for each absorption practice, an equation to predict its relevance according to the context of participation of an SME in a CIN. The practices resulting from the qualitative phase and the equations formulated following the quantitative approach were then implemented in a maturity assessment grid. The latter will be iteratively refined along with its application to evaluate the absorptive capacity of SMEs embedded in CINs.
