La mobilité pendulaire interurbaine en France face aux enjeux du changement climatique : caractérisation socioéconomique, analyse spatiale et potentiels de report modal

Abstract : The daily commute has been the subject of abundant research aiming to describe and analyse the characteristics of commuters and their travel patterns. In France, such studies have focused primarily on residents of the functional areas built around cities, called (French) urban areas. This thesis aims to provide supplementary insight into the topic of the daily commute by focusing on intercity commuters, i.e. people who commute from one French urban area to another. A characterisation of intercity commuters is proposed on the basis of a quantitative approach using census databases of the French mainland population. Our results show a diversity of intercity commuters in terms of both sociodemographic profiles and categories of spatial organisation of commuting trips. The intensive use of the car, which is the primary mode of intercity commuting, is highlighted. Despite their rather low share in the population of large and medium-sized urban areas in France, intercity commuters, because they travel long distances by car, are accountable for significant volumes of CO2 emissions. This result led to quantify the potential modal shift of intercity commuters from car to rail. Our results show that levers exist, in theory, to reduce car use and associated emissions. The influence of the spatial factor, at different scales, on the extent of achievable emission reductions, is attested. Finally, this thesis analyses the diversity of cost impacts that modal shift policies would have on various socio-professional categories.
