La pollution de l'air en région parisienne : exposition et perception sur les sites touristiques

Abstract : The Paris metropolitan area concentrates a lot of human activities and buildings generating high emissions of pollutants. Ozone, nitrogen dioxide and particles often exceed the annual and daily thresholds set by European Union and France. Exposure to exceptional concentrations of these pollutants can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems for people in Paris. Air quality can be a nuisance and have a negative impact on the image of the area, for which tourism is one of the leading economic activities. The objectives of this thesis are to evaluate when and where tourists are more exposed to air pollution, and how they perceive it. To evaluate the exposure of tourists, spatial and temporal variations of ozone, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter are studied at two different scales: first, at regional scale, with the data from the official monitoring network Airparif, and second, more local, with measurements of ozone and particles on different routes and Parisian sights. Exposure is different depending on pollutants, season and location. Tourists are most exposed to ozone from May to September during sunny days and in green areas, away from traffic. They are more exposed to particles and nitrogen dioxide from October to April during calm weather with morning inversions and nearby road traffic. Tourists' perception of air pollution was evaluated with questionnaire surveys on the sites of the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Cœur and Notre-Dame over several days. Tourists perceive a good or fair air quality in Paris. This perception varies daily depending primarily on weather conditions and visibility of smog. It depends also on sites, resulting from visual, olfactory and noise perceived differently. The origin of tourists affects their perception with one major difference between the French tourists and foreign tourists.
