Vesto Melvin Slipher (1875-1969) et la naissance de l'astrophysique extragalactique.

Abstract : At the beginning of the twentieth century a new domain arouses from astrophysics. Vesto Slipher's work is at the beginning of the way from the concept of nebulae to that of galaxies. Our work is based on the analysis of the Lowell Observatory archives, a review of the periodicals and books in astronomy from this perdiod, as well as numerous historical and philosophical sources. In the introduction, we summarize the knowledge at the end of the ninteenth century. The first section reports Slipher's life and work with the discovery of the high radial velocities of the nebulae. With these data, Hubble sets-up the velocity-distance relation and de Sitter tests the cosmological hypotheses drawn from the General Relativity. The second section examines the issue of the birth of the concept of galaxies, particularly how Slipher goes from the protostellar nebula's model to that of extragalactic nebula. The third section questions the cultural and professional context in which extragalactic astrophysics appears, and in particular the advance of the United-States and the causes of the French backwardness.
