Abstract : Feiz ha Breiz was a catholic and monarchist weekly magazine entirely written in Breton and published under the patronage of the bishop of Quimper. This newspaper has its place in the movement of the Religious Weeks but differs slightly from it, if one considers the variety of the themes covered. For 19 years (1865-1884), this newspaper offers its vision of a changing world what with the development of the industrial, scientific and democratic society on the one hand and on the other hand the monumentous rise of the catholic missions and French colonial expansion which lead this newspaper to present populations unknown to its readers, up to that point. Heirs to the Christian tradition, the writers of Feiz ha Breiz must position themselves regarding the scientific theories on human evolution and racialist ideas developed by scientists, mainly among republican and atheist circles. Fought in Europe, the Church develops overseas during that period and the missionaries are the heroic instruments of the Gospel and consequently of the salvation of millions of souls. By showing the cruelty of unbelievers, Feiz ha Breiz intends to show the veracity of the axiom “out of the Church, no salvation” and to highlight the dangers which await Christian Europe if it turns away from the Church. The period of Feiz ha Breiz being also when the France of the Second Empire and of the Third Republic starts to conquer a colonial empire, this newspaper does not fail to inform us on the “alliance of the sabre and the aspergillum”, to take up here a famous phrase.
