Contribution à la description des gestes d'enseignement - Un cas d'analyse didactique comparée : les aides-éducateurs et les professeurs des écoles

Abstract : This research shows how a typology of teaching actions drawn from past didactic studies can account for the nature and functions of learning aids used in a school environment. A teaching action is defined as an act aimed at getting pupils to relate to objects of various types, including techniques, knowledge, physical objects, and symbolic relations. The focus here is on the aids used by two types of adult instructors -- school teachers and teaching assistants -- to promote learning in fourth-grade pupils, as they solve problems individually under ordinary teaching conditions. The learning aids studied are compared along three dimensions: (1) the discipline (mathematics or French), (2) the teacher's experience (first year on the job, 15 years of seniority), and (3) the teacher's title (certified teacher or teaching assistant). The main hypothesis is that, for any instructor, the teaching process always involves three major didactic functions: controlling the responsibility assumed by the pupil for his/her knowledge, setting up conducive learning environments, and managing the time that governs the order and speed at which knowledge is introduced.

It is shown that differences between the aids used by instructors occupying different positions in the institution stem from differences in how they control these three functions. It is also shown that the learning aids used and the way the didactic functions are fulfilled differ across disciplines and vary with the type of knowledge taught. Certain teaching actions appear to have a relatively predictable impact on didactic-function management and to create conditions that trigger some of the phenomena described in the didactic literature. Others, on the contrary, are highly context-dependent.
