L'impact cognitif des dispositifs médiatiques sur les enfants d'âge préscolaire en situation d'apprentissage avec un adulte. Étude d'un cas de simulateur informatique dans le contexte d'une exposition scientifique

Abstract : This research is focused on the cognitive contribution of media devices which are displayed in interactive scientific exhibitions for young children, in different contexts of accompaniment of the children. Two studies, based on a computer simulator allowing mixtures of paints, were conducted successively within the "3-5 years old" exhibition of the Cité des enfants ("Children's corner") in the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie (Paris). Forty five children less than six years old were observed: twenty under the control of the same expert tutor, then twenty five under the control of one of their parents. To characterise interactions in the course of activity, a specific model was developed: the media square. Analysis of the parent/child interactions showed that such tutoring has an impact only from a definite age, relating to the considered field of knowledge, and seems essentially connected to the informative contents of exchanges. In addition, the simulation activity seems to have mainly the function of a formal exercise for the child. The impact of the use of simulation type devices, displayed in scientific exhibitions, thus depends on the previous experience of the child, but also on the tutoring quality of the adult accompanying the child during use of the simulation. This last point raises the question of the adult's help in the child's conceptualisation, from the point of view of discourse, but also in the use, on the level of manipulation.
