La dépendance automobile pour l'accès aux services aux ménages en grande couronne francilienne

Abstract : The automobile dependence raises the question of the standard of mobility. In the outer suburbs of Paris, the automobile is the key element that determines the location of the general amenities to the population and the access of households to these services. The success of large suburban supermarkets and the decline of a significant share of the local shops are partially due to the constant reinforcement of this car-based model, as we have clearly established it for the period between 1990 and 1999.

This observation led us to regard non-motorised households as the principal victims of the automobile dependence. But this appreciation must be moderated according to the territories and the populations. Some territories are not so dependent on the automobile standard, as part of the non-motorised households have developed a system of alternative mobility to the car based on a strong solidarity between relatives, who partially compensate for their absence of automobile equipment.

But if, in general, non motorized households remain socially marginalized by their exclusion from the automobile system, the motorized households are not free from this risk either. Our observations show that low income motorized households are obliged to strictly limit the number of kilometers which they do daily in their private car. Our evaluation showed that because of this limitation, nearly 30% of the motorized working households could not reach the automobile standard of mobility determined by the wealthier households.
