Interférométrie Atomique : des Sources d'Atomes Refroidies aux Lasers à Atomes

Abstract : This document describes all the scientific work carried out between 1995 and 2004 in the United States then in France. This work is centered around the topic of atom optics and atom interferometry,a field of atomic physics which knew two spectacular major revolutions : the result of sophisticated techniques of cooling of atoms by laser allowing a "collimation" of the atomic beams and the realization in 1995 of the first Bose-Einstein condensate of alkalies, precursor of the atom laser, coherent source with high luminance. All this work required the development of many experimental devices. They on the one hand led to the realization of three atomic inertial sensors of high performance: a collimated atomic beam gyrometer, a gradiometer with cold atoms, an inertial base with laser cooled atoms. In addition, they made it possible to develop two coherent atomic sources of a new model on which a great number of results on the major nature of the Bose-Einstein condensates could be obtained. This manuscript is organized in 5 chapters making it possible to gradually approach the problems of the atomic inertial sensors (primarily with non-coherent atomic sources), the fundamental properties of BEC, atom laser production, coherence properties of degenerate atomic sources and finally the prospects of using atom lasers in atom interferometry.
