Etude Goniopolarimétrique des Emissions Radio de Jupiter et Saturne à l'aide du Récepteur Radio de la Sonde Cassini

Abstract : The Cassini mission, dedicated to study the saturnian system, is carrying a radio receiver (RPWS/HFR) covering the 3.5 kHz-16 MHz frequency band which is adapted to saturnian radio emssions. One key feature of this receiver is its direction-finding capabilities. It is indeed possible to retrieve direction of arrival, flux density and state of polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave, although the dipole antennas connected to the receiver have no angular resolution. On the instrumental side, I carried out antenna calibrations and developped direction-finding inversion methods adapted to such receivers. I have studied the jovian magnetosphere through 2 aspects. First, we have obtained a new reference spectrum of of jovian radio emission within the band of RPWS/HFR. Among all the jovian radio emissions, I focused on the quasi-periodic bursts. This jovian radio component is the only one for which we do not know the source. Saturnian radio observations began in january 2004, through a joint observation campaign Hubble Space Telescope (HST) / Cassini. The UV HST camera have observed the auroral zone of saturn while Cassini was in the solar wind, approaching the planet. The HST observations are compared to radio ones, in terms of density flux and polarization. The first preliminary results of this study are in complete agreement with the Voyager ones. Last, I present a proposition of explanation to the variability of the apparent sidereal radio period of Saturn, measured by the mean of the auroral radio emission modulations.
