Abstract : The lack of usability of Virtual Environments (VEs) is a major obstacle to their use in a large scale in many domains of professional activity. These computerized environments present several specificities (i.e., use of 3D, of multimodality, etc.) that are not taken into account by classical usability evaluation methods. It is nevertheless necessary to make methods available in order to assess the ergonomic quality of VEs. This PhD manuscript describes the different stages in the design, development and assessment of Ergonomic Criteria (E.C.) adapted to Human Virtual Environments Interactions. A first stage consisted of defining the E.C. from the gathering and classification of usability recommendations dedicated to VEs, extracted from the literature. Based on 170 recommendations, 20 elementary criteria have been selected, defined, justified and illustrated. This stage constitutes the foundation of E.C. adaptation to VEs. A second stage has enabled the validation of E.C. during a classification task in which 10 usability specialists have assigned properly to main criteria 68% of interaction difficulties that have been presented to them. This stage has also revealed the E.C. that were well understood and those that required improvements. A third stage compared experimentally the performances in three situations of usability evaluations applied to 2 VEs: users testing, inspection with E.C., and free inspection. The results of this experiment show that the evaluation performance with the E.C. is more significantly important than the one with free inspection; it also shows that E.C. inspections and users tests enable equivalent evaluation performances. Others methodological aspects such as types of problems identified, internal consistency and problem overlapping between methods have been compared.
