Abstract : Personnel timetabling is a major problem which concerns most of the organizations. We are focusing here on the automatisation of this task combining heavy computation and bargaining between the different actors (workers, managers and customers). A complete review of usual timetabling preference models is performed. We propose a new model, preference constraint, combining preference binary relation from decision theory and soft constraint from constraint programming. By admitting incomparability and intransitivity, this model is more fitted to actors' preference elicitation, interaction and decision support. New methods for individual preference aggregation are introduced including ethical principles: equity (Pigou-Dalton, Suppes-Sen) and efficiency (Pareto). These principles are used to define generic compromise criteria as quality of work life induced by schedules. Next, filtering and search algorithms have been designed for some preference constraints dedicated to previously defined criteria. Finally a nurse scheduling decision support system is described.
