Débuter sa carrière professionnelle en Afrique. : L’idéal d’insertion sociale des volontaires français à Dakar et Antananarivo (Sénégal, Madagascar)

Hélène Quashie
Abstract : This paper compares the migrations of French voluntary service associated with the structures of international aid and cooperation in Senegal and in Madagascar. It combines several profiles and professional horizons of young people from 20 to 35 years old, and constitutes a specific category within the expatriate networks. Various paradoxes impede their ideal and will of social immersion into local society. Their mobility is organized from France and defines locally an economic and socio-professional elite, in spite of the weakness of their hierarchical status and income. The social labels to which French volunteers are sent back evoke privileges which also nourrish an ethno-racialized divide. Different mechanisms and contradictions contribute therefore to develop confinement and social grouping.
