La géographie et l’habiter pour identifier des situations de handicap : approche environnementale du handicap et évaluation d’un dispositif d’accompagnement médico-social

Abstract : This thesis aims to apply geography to the medico-social sector. It was conducted in a CIFRe (Industrial Convention of Formation by research) contrat, within the association LADAPT, a structure that cares for people who have suffered brain damage through a french support and work assistance establishment (ESAT). Defending the idea that disability is a phenomenon that does not exist in itself and that only occurs in the interaction between an individual and the environment in which he/she evolves, this research, based on the conceptual model of the Processus de Production du Handicap (PPH), takes the opposite view of the individual, medical and administrative perception of disability conveyed in French social policies. The starting point is the mobilization of spatial relationships of individuals in order to understand all the links that unite them with their social, cultural and spatial environment. By analyzing the objective and subjective relationships that each person maintains with the places that he/she frequents and the movements that he/she makes, the starting point consists in the deployment of a spatial and geographical approach to identify the ruptures between the individual and his/her environment. On the basis of the disability situations observed, the aim is to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of medical and social support in its capacity to act on the brakes, limits and obstacles existing in the living environment of the persons.
