Cino del Duca (1899-1967) : de la bande dessinée à la presse du coeur, un patron de presse franco-italien au service de la culture de masse

Abstract : .+ Cino del Duca built a French-Italian popular media empire, the fourth French press group in 1967. Autodidact and intuitive, nothing marked him out to became an editor and he started out as a representative. In the 1928, his first publishing house contributes to the creation of the Italian comic through the children’s paper "L’intrepido" . His youth is activist and communist, but his commitment doesn’t resist the rise of fascism. Persecuted by the political police, he emigrates to France in 1932.His first children's magazine "Hurrah!", is among « the comics of the golden age».Hard worker, he develops a very lucrative editorial structure of European dimension. The war doesn’t undermine his pugnacity and he achieves to publish in the two zones until 1942. In 1947, he launches the photo romance and is consecrated king of the woman’s press. Widely criticized for these sentimental magazines, he diversifies his activity in the publishing, cinema, printing and becomes the owner of a newspaper. His group, les Editions mondiales, operates in a fully integrated and independent manner. After his death, his wife sells the group to investors in 1979.Without heir, Simone Del Duca invests his fortune in a cultural and scientific foundation. Creator of Nous deux and Télé poche, producer of Touchez pas au grisbi and of L’ Avventura, editor of Rois maudits, the prodigious itinerary of this press magnate illustrates the mutations of cultural enterprises in the 20th century.
