Free-floating : Stackographic inquiry on the free-floating e-scooter

Between July 2020 and April 2023, three free-floating e-scooter companies were authorized to operate in Paris. Quickly, this new mode of micro-mobility became an exciting subject of controversy. Are free-floating e-scooters an ecological means of transport ? Are the employees who work for these digital platforms sufficiently well protected socially? Will this new means of transport transform our cities into a vast space dedicated to consumption? During this period, we have tried to understand the functioning and the deep nature of this technological object. For this, we relied on the theory of Stack developed by the American researcher Benjamin Bratton and we imagined a new way of investigating this type of highly problematic digital objects. In a research-creation approach, we propose seven stackographic operations to get to know free-floating e-scooters. Each of the research operations is an opportunity to understand better the digital geography in which we now live, and to consider the contours of a new type of field of investigation: stackography.
Entre juillet 2020 et avril 2023, trois entreprises de trottinettes électriques en free-floating ont été autorisées à opérer à Paris. Rapidement, ce nouveau mode de micro-mobilité est devenu un objet de controverses passionnant. Les trottinettes en free-floating sont-elles un moyen de déplacement écologique ? Les employé·e·s qui travaillent pour ces plateformes numériques sont-iels suffisamment bien protégé·e·s socialement ? Ce nouveau moyen de locomotion va-t-il transformer nos villes en un vaste espace dédié à la consommation ? Au cours de cette période, nous avons tenté de comprendre le fonctionnement et la nature profonde de cet objet technologique. Pour cela, nous nous sommes appuyé·e·s sur la théorie du Stack développée par le chercheur étasunien Benjamin Bratton et nous avons imaginé une nouvelle manière d’enquêter sur ce type d’objets numériques hautement problématique. Dans une démarche de recherche-création, nous proposons sept opérations stackographiques permettant de faire connaissance avec les trottinettes en free-floating. Chacune des opérations de recherche est l’occasion de comprendre un peu mieux la géographie numérique dans laquelle nous vivons désormais, et d’envisager les contours d’un nouveau type de champ d’investigation : la stackographie.
