La Question politique dans les romans du XVIIe siècle

Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to study the changing modalities of the integration of the political question in 17th century narrative prose fiction. This integration is perceived as problematic by theoreticians as a result of the novel’s reputation as being merely entertaining and the prominence of the question of love. The entertainment novel’s reputation is such that politics is subordinate to the matter of love. Politics is there to provide a repertoire of characters and twists that delay the dénouement of the love story. Somewhere between roman à clef and symbolic distance, fiction is built through a series of exchanges and tensions made possible by intermingling with current events. It becomes a laboratory for political exploration, inventing possibilities and pushing assumptions to the limit, hence offering a figurative counterpart to philosophical theorization. Characters interact, tensions rise from a representation of figures that are close to power or faced with political ups and downs and are played again through expression, inviting to a poetic investigation. In novels, political expression lies on the border between fictional verve and rhetorical tradition. It manifests the tension that passions and illusions bring in the age of neo-Tacitianism. These tensions, present at the level of eloquent discourse, sententious statements as well as figures and vocabulary, favor binary forms of discourse. Therefore, the integration of the political issue in the plot and in the language allows for a syntactic, structural and lexical enrichment of the fiction.
