Grammaire descriptive du tai lü

Abstract : This dissertation offers a description of Tai Lue, a Tai-Kadai language, as it is spoken in the Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China. The analytical work is based on oral corpora collected in the field and falls within the theoretical framework of functional linguistics. The research is divided into three parts: 1° documentation of socio-cultural facts; 2° collection and processing of oral corpora; 3° description and analysis of the phonology, tonology, morphology, syntax, and to a lesser extent of the lexicography of Tai Lue. The last part occupies the central place in this dissertation and consists of a grammar of Tai Lue which aims to be descriptive, complete, and up to date. Among the notable observations, we can cite first of all that this language shows significant tonal alternations. Among them, some are purely phonological (it is therefore about tone sandhi), others are governed by well-defined syntactic and precise morphological contexts. This last type of variation reveals the stability of tones in Tai Lue and makes it possible to enrich the knowledge of how a tone can interact with morphology and syntax, to question the widespread conception according to which tones (especially in Asian languages) would only serve to distinguish the meaning of lexical morphemes, and to make a possible contribution to linguistic typology. The syntax of Tai Lue, on the other hand, provides interesting strategies such as the fact that a single tonal change makes it possible to distinguish the negation from the affirmation of the same morpheme, or the delimitation of the syntactic border of a noun phrase or a relative clause via a demonstrative. Finally, many discursive markers are described in detail because they have a high frequency of use in everyday language and bring a much greater semantic and pragmatic load that we tend to minimize.
