Les intérêts pédagogiques du tutoriel immersif sur l'apprentissage technique appliqué au domaine médico-chirurgical : études sur la rétention, la restitution de connaissances théoriques, l'apprentissage des techniques et sur la généralisation au monde réel d'une procédure technique apprise

Abstract : This thesis, a product of six published works, presents findings on the use of Virtual Reality (VR) immersive tutorials. This pedagogical tool combines a video filmed from the first-person view (FPV) and projected in VR with interactive data to create a highly effective means of training students and health professionals. Living an experience from a first-person perspective optimizes experiential learning by "learning through the eyes of an expert.” Use of this tool decreases learners’ cognitive load while increasing their engagement. We have demonstrated that regardless of age, immersive tutorials lead to a better understanding of the material as well as a gain in user confidence. Practical data are more easily retrieved—both during question/answer tests and when generalizing a procedure to the real world— performed more quickly and with fewer errors. Instructors play a key role in providing the underlying theory and context. Immersive tutorial content can be created quickly and inexpensively, and can be deployed on a large scale. Used appropriately, this is proving to be an efficient and promising tool with global reach that can help optimize training for those who require experiential learning. An ideal target is the health sector: professionals benefit from accelerated training that reduces potential errors in practice.The use of VR with FPV in education is based on a constructivist theoretical foundation that improves learning among surgeons. The immersive VR conceptualized, produced, and tested in this thesis provides experiential learning in a complex healthcare model, essential for reducing medical errors.The various modalities through which this content can be applied—VR headset (hands-on training), computer (instructor presentation), cell phone (refresher), and augmented reality glasses (in-procedure assistance) — suggest a pedagogical continuum of true digital mentoring and support.
