La photographie artistique, associative et journalistique en France et en Espagne dans les années 1930 : vers la fabrication d'une culture ouvrière transnationale ?

Abstract : This research work focuses on the photographic production of the 1930s in France and Spain, with the development of left-wing cultural associations, inspired by the Communist International. Indeed, artists and intellectuals advocate the development of photography and its massive distribution in the press to denounce the rise of fascism in Europe. By creating an aesthetic of the worker and of communism, these groups hope to create a “class consciousness” in the proletariat. This research is a study of committed artistic productions in Spain, with regard to French production, and in the Communist International. At the time, the medium of photography was booming. How has photography, or the art of “technical reproducibility”, influenced the development of a working-class culture in Europe? Why was there such an important circulation of images between France and Spain during the 1930s?
