Cheminements épistémologiques et discursifs dans l'écriture de recherche en contexte français : les doctorants internationaux en sciences du langage de l'Université de Franche-Comté

Abstract : This research in teaching and learning of French as a foreign language investigates the obstacles a group of international students has to cope with in the conducting and writing of their doctoral thesis in linguistics. While French universities face an overwhelming increase in the number of students and a growing internationalization, more than 40% of doctoral students are international, most of whom are non-native speakers.Meeting the expectations of a doctoral research is a significant undertaking to home students and even more so for international ones. This is shown by the existence of many learning specialized handbooks and websites, in academic or informal settings. Our research aims to identify the difficulties that international doctoral students face in the writing of their doctoral thesis and to propose alternative teachings methods to overcome it. We postulate that academic cultures and epistemological attitudes underpin research writings. International students could face difficulties in their research because of gaps between their academic culture and their host university’s one. This point could be decisive in their academic integration. In order to identify and understand the multiple skills required for the writing of a thesis, we tried to describe research literacy as well as the expectations of students’ thesis supervisors. We analyzed extracts of defended thesis from the same university to test our first results. Then we collected thesis drafts written by students from three different cultural and linguistic areas, and we tried to enlighten it with biographical interviews with them.We identify several kinds of gaps between the student’s skills, capitals and strategies, and the academic habits they have to conform to. Thus, we were able to infer three main kinds of difficulties in their research writing. These obstacles result from difficulties in assuming a critical and distant attitude toward their object of research. Our teaching and learning proposals use concepts and research streams such as Academic Literacies, epistemological mediation and suggest a better use of the students’ multilingual and multicultural capitals.
