Développement d’une méthodologie de conversion du don de sang au don de plasma dans un système de don anonyme, volontaire et non-rémunéré, au travers des théories du comportement planifié et de l’implémentation d’intentions

Abstract : For decades, engaging people in whole-blood donation has been a major worldwide public health issue. These last years, the strong increase of the demand of plasma-derived products has led non-remunerated collection establishments, such as the National French Blood Institute, to experience difficulties in achieving national self-sufficiency. This thesis aims to callup on knowledge and techniques from human sciences, more specifically from social psychology, to develop applied solutions that will bolster conversion of whole-blood donors to plasma donation. To do so, we conducted three studies in which we identified the main motivations and deterrents to plasma donation of whole-blood donor samples. An intervention based on the theory of planned behavior and implementation intentions techniques was evaluated in experiment 2 and 3. This intervention aimed at reducing deterrents to donation, increasing intention to donate, and facilitate conversion to plasma donation. Our results show that whole-blood donors perceive more deterrents to plasma donation than whole-blood donation, and that interventions based on these deterrents are more likely to facilitate conversion. These results give us a better understanding of the main determinants of commitment of whole-blood donors in plasma donation, and enable us to identify applied solutions for the National French Blood Institute
