An architecture of fragment. Architecture, archeology, monument : thoughts on the discipline - between Aldo Rossi and Piranesi

This thesis seeks to question the disciplinary nature of architecture through the topic of fragment. The main hypothesis of this work is that, since its origin in the Renaissance period, the architectural discipline is fundamentally incomplete and fragmentary and that it places at its center the subjectivity of the architect. Through the study of the theoritical thought of Aldo Rossi (1931-1997) and the engraved artwork of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), the aim is to propose a definition of the discipline of architecture as a poetic archeology, a subjective restitution of heterogeneous elements. The first step is to identify the main elements of architectural discipline through the invention of perspective by Brunelleschi and the first theory of architecture by Alberti and explore their relationships in the Rossian theory of architecture and project. The importance of the subjectivity of the architect, of the monument, of the topic of form and of the city in Aldo Rossi’s thought leads us to question the nature of architectural expérience – its links with time and memory – through the age value proposed by the historian Aloïs Riegl in his « Modern cult of monuments » (1903). This particular experience of architecture, between pictoriality and immediacy, lead us to study more precisely the engraved artwork of Piranesi : its relationship with archeology and with the Rossian imagination and analogy. Finally, through a collection of fragments of architectural thoughts, we question the figures of theater (central theme of Rossian thought) and prison (important in Piranesian artwork) and we question the monument as the ruin of the city as form and of the project as process.
