Représentation et perception d'un risque de santé publique au début du 21e siècle : la dengue à Nouméa et à Papeete en 2008-2009

Abstract : The dengue fever has been spreading in the South Pacific area since the 1950s and the prevalence of this vector-borne disease has gradually been enforced and has become endemic on Tahiti island and epidemic in New Caledonia. The 2008-2009 disease outbreak is particularly interesting as an example of the incursion of the DENV-4 serotype which had not appeared for more than thirty years. High school students represent the part of the population the most exposed to this virus. The govemment’s authorities (DASS (Department of Health and Social Affairs), Direction de la Santé (Public Health Department), Education Nationale (Ministry of Education) have to face the challenge of being able to protect and to heighten awareness to this vector-borne disease this particularly vulnerable group. School curricula, public awareness campaigns (posters, flyers, cartoons, Dengue Day) are aimed to inform high school students about the sanitary measures to adopt. The research wants to characterize and compare the perception and the representation of this disease in addition to studying how the recommendations are applied by the senior and junior high school students in New Caledonia and Tahiti. The results of this study show that the occurrence of the epidemical risk is perceived as a danger. The preventive approach with posters and flyers is supplemented by the media in 2009 and online nowadays. The curricula of geography concerning health remain very narrow. Students do not know enough geography to understand the spread of epidemic at the regional (Pacific) and territorial (country) scale.
