La Falémé au cours du quaternaire récent : analyse paléoenvironnementale d’un espace soudanien riche en vestiges archéologiques en Afrique de l’Ouest

Abstract : In West Africa, the knowledge of paleoenvironmental evolution has long progressed through the study of oceanic and lacustrine core drilling. The Sudano-Sahelian fluvial hydrosystems, both poorly distributed in space and much coveted by the populations, have been the subject of few studies. Those PhD studies are about the lower valley of the Falémé river, a tributary of the Senegal river near the Mali-Senegal border. The methodology is based on a geomorphological study of a section of about 33 km, and on sedimentological analyses such as classic grain-size analyses, but also some less exploited analyses like quartz morphoscopy and exoscopy. We also tried to study the heavy mineral fraction, the clay fraction (XRD) and the geochemical signature of sediments (XRF and ICP MS). All the results allow us to confirm and refine the chronostratigraphic framework of the lower Falémé valley for approximately 40 000 years . They highlight several elements: (1) The metamorphoses of the fluvial system offer a good correlation with multi-millennial climatic oscillations attested at Late Pleistocen, but also with Holocen fluctuations of lesser amplitude. (2) This confirms the high sensitivity of the Sudano Sahelian hydrosystems to climate change, and the great potential of their paleoclimatic records. (3) Regarding the methodological approach, the quartz morphoscopy is justified to try to better mesure and characterize the aeolian inputs.
