Conception et réalisation d’un banc quasi optique de caractérisation des matériaux en bande millimétrique

Abstract : The development of techniques for characterizing the properties of materials in the range of millimetric frequencies has met a growing interest for several years. For this purpose, various theoretical and experimental methods have been presented in the literature. Free-space materials characterization techniques are quite attractive, compared to other methods, due to their non-contact and non-destructive analysis and the relative simplicity of sample preparation. The type of measurement in free space, "quasi-optical", is today considered as the best tool for characterizing the dielectric properties of materials over a wide frequency band. This method consists of measuring the reflection and/or transmission of an electromagnetic wave incident on a sample in order to determine its electromagnetic characteristics. This technique can be used for the characterization not only of dielectric materials, but also of magnetic and anisotropic materials. In this context, the work presented in my thesis concerns the establishment of an innovative "quasi-optical" free-space characterization system to accurately measure the properties of materials in the millimeter band, in particular in the W band (75 GHz – 110GHz). This system is therefore composed of “offset reflector” antennas capable of satisfying the plane wave conditions on the material to be characterized. Thus, and knowing its thickness, the characterization consists in extracting the properties of this material from the measurements of the S parameters (transmission / reflection).
