Être, se penser et se dire « au régime », une affaire de femmes et non d’hommes ? : Étude des représentations impliquées dans la description et la nomination des pratiques de contrôle alimentaire

Abstract : This research has for subject the study of the social representations and declared practices of diet. It is based on different studies. Its purpose is to understand what determines the fact that women are always more numerous than men to declare doing so. The first, a qualitative (n=8) and graphic (n=25) studies aims to a better understanding of the social representations of the diet and aims to apprehend the object "diet" without inducing gender categories. The second, a quantitative study (n = 337), aims to a better understanding of the social representations of the diet and those of people who make a diet. The third study, a qualitative study (n = 34) and the fourth study, a quantitative study (n=650) focuses simultaneously on representations and declared diet practices. The results show variations in the nomination of food control practices. It appears that women and men share an almost identical meaning of the word "diet" and attribute the practice that refers to it to women. Furthermore when naming or, on the contrary, refusing to use the term “regime” in order to describe its alimentary control practices depends on gender of people. This act, reflecting specific representations, is akin to an identity act allowing the safeguard of a positive social identity and the affirmation of belonging to a group. We can then think that less than real differences between the dietary practices of women and men, the differences in nomination observed are more likely to be explained by the way in which individuals represent their practices in relation to their identity and gender norms.
