The impact of the intergenerational transmission of poverty on children living in an orphanage at Dar es-Salaam, Tanzania
Les effets de la transmission intergénérationnelle de la pauvreté sur les enfants dans un orphelinat à Dar es-Salaam en Tanzanie

This thesis analyses the mechanism of intergenerational transmission of poverty and the capacity of the orphanage as an institution to prevent this transmission. At first, this approach depicts the concept of poverty which constitutes the object of the transmission as a heritage, then analyses the vectors of this transmission and the capacity of the orphanage to break it. Data collected on the field at the orphanage in Dar es Salaam and in Zanzibar, where the majority of the parents lives, allows to perceive the principal concepts from two perspectives: on one hand by enabling principal indicators, as the index of multidimensional poverty, on the other hand by revealing the perception of concerned interviewed thanks with method of participant survey. Thus the poverty is seen simultaneously from the outside and from the inside. The confrontation between the two persceptives offer precious index to understand the mechanism of the intergenerational transmission of poverty, and the functioning of the orphanage which seems to offer a solution of survival emergency rather than of a long term vision of breaking the cycle of transmission of poverty.
La thèse analyse les mécanismes de transmission intergénérationnelle de la pauvreté et la capacité d'un orphelinat en tant qu'institution à empêcher cette transmission. La démarche adoptée traite d'abord le concept de pauvreté qui constitue l'objet de la transmission comme héritage, pour ensuite analyser les vecteurs de cette transmission ainsi que la capacité de l'orphelinat à rompre cette transmission. Les données recueillies sur le terrain à l'orphelinat à Dar es Salam et à Zanzibar où résident la majorité des parents, servent à appréhender les principaux concepts de deux de manières ; d'une part, en permettant d'évaluer les principaux indicateurs, comme l'indice de pauvreté multidimensionnelle, d'autre part, en révélant la perception des intéressés eux-mêmes, grâce à la méthode d'enquête participante. La pauvreté est vue à la fois de l'extérieure et de l'intérieure. La confrontation des deux perceptions offre de précieux indices pour comprendre les rouages de la transmission intergénérationnelle de la pauvreté, ainsi que le fonctionnement de l'orphelinat qui semble offrir plutôt une solution de survie en urgence, qu'une vision de long terme destinée à rompre la transmission de la pauvreté.
