Elaboration de céramiques silicatées à base des matières premières argileuses et d'un déchet végétal de Centrafrique : Caractéristiques physicochimiques et frittage

Abstract : In recent years waste management has become an important concern worldwide. Current regulations require the valorization of these wastes in order to limit the landfill disposal volume and to preserve natural resources exploitation. Indeed, in the field of ceramics, some organic wastes are used for the elaboration of construction clay-based materials. In this context, three clay deposits (labeled NZ1, NZ2 and KO) located in Bangui (capital of Central African Republic, CAR) and one organic waste (plantain skins: Musa Paradisiaca, labeled MP) commonly found in CAR (and in the tropical region) were selected to perform this work. These clays, mainly constituted with kaolinite, illites and quartz, appeared to be suitable for the manufacture of earthenware. For NZ1 or KO samples, the open porosity decreased significantly while the thermal conductivity and stress to rupture values increased continuously upon increasing sintering temperature from 900 to 1200 °C. By adding 3% and 5 mass% of MP to KO and NZ1 respectively, the mechanical resistance was improved by a rate of 10% after firing at 1000 °C. Consequently, a reduction of energy cost during firing (ΔT  100 to 200 °C) was achieved. For NZ2 – MP mixtures sintered at 1100 °C for 1h or 2h, the open porosity was between 36 and 40% while the compressive strength was significantly decreased (by a rate of 60%). The sintering of these clay-based materials involved viscous flow and grain boundary diffusion mechanisms respectively while increasing the sintering temperature. The addition of MP enhanced the occurrence of the flux, leading to a better strengthening of NZ1 and KO samples after sintering at 1000 °C. The values of thermal conductivity and stress to rupture calculated for the solid phase allowed highlighting the effect of mullite crystallization and amorphous phase content regarding the studied compositions.
