Les faciès culturels dans l’est de la Gaule entre le IIIe s. av. J.-C. et le IVe s. apr. J.-C. : essai de modélisation

Abstract : This work aims at revisiting the notion of ‘cultural group’ and its use in archaeology. To do so, it is based on the statistical modelling of large quantities of artefacts, discovered in eastern Gaul between the 3rd century BC and the 4th century AD. This modelling is developed on the idea that culture can be approached by archaeologists when multiple facets of material culture are considered, therefore large quantities of variables. The detection of typological assemblages, their comparison and their distribution within the study area are at the centre of this methodology. Statistical and computer tools will be used to highlight these assemblages and then allow us, through the analysis of their exact composition, to reflect on the meaning of the groups they determine. We will also be able to observe their evolution over time. Different phases will then be proposed, illustrating the changes in territorial organization and the consumption of objects between the La Tène periods and the end of the Roman Empire.
