En quête de transculturalisme : l’écriture de l’altérité dans les œuvres de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Monica Ali, Bernardine Evaristo, Jhumpa Lahiri et Zadie Smith

Abstract : For the past twenty years, transculturalism has attracted increasing interest in the social sciences as well as in literary studies. This concept seems liable to open a way out of the binaries that postcolonial theory pointed to and maybe even reinforced. However, our analysis of contemporary transcultural novels sheds light on the difficulty of escaping binary oppositions and root thinking. It leads to a reevaluation of the concept of transculturalism through the prism of the notion of alterity. This study first aims at conveying how manifestations of transculturalism in public and private western spaces sometimes hinder the formation of a feeling of belonging and the creation of a home for transcultural characters. Such resistance can be explained by the omnipresence and persistence of forms of alterity or otherness, which the authors explore through a wide variety of literary devices. The writing tends to highlight processes of alterisation and encourages readers to share the experience of the other. Finally, it is suggested that the fictional form of transculturalism may be able to subvert the hegemony of western discursive practices. Fiction may also help to enhance the transculturality of social spaces, as the authors themselves contribute to it through their social commitment, be it on social media, in associations or as university professors. The transcultural novels of this corpus may thus be read according to a decolonial approach which makes room for the subaltern to speak.
