Études des attitudes relatives à la communication ouverte : création d’un outil de mesure et d’une intervention en simulation auprès d’étudiant·e·s en soins infirmiers

Abstract : Safety voice behaviour is defined as the unsolicited sharing of information to enhance the safety of a situation. Although this behaviour is associated with higher technical performance of healthcare teams, a tendency to silence is frequently noted. The aim of this thesis in applied social psychology is to investigate safety voice attitudes and behaviours among nursing students. Two studies describe the development and validation of a safety voice attitudes questionnaire among a sample of nursing students and a sample of medical students. A three factors structure is supported, relating to: the perception of safety, the safety voice climate within the team, and the perception of efficacy. Three studies assess the predictive validity of the questionnaire on the self-reported likelihood of speaking up. Finally, a study describes a simulation-based intervention, allowing for observations of nursing students behaviours when facing opportunities to speak up. Results suggest a strong tendency to opt for silence among nursing students, and the use of unassertive strategies to voice concerns. The students’ status, the presence of a patient, and the fear of consequences are the most commonly perceived barriers. The implications of these results for the training of healthcare workers and nursing students are then discussed.
