Les petites villes dans les espaces ruraux en France : états des lieux, enjeux et perspectives. Le cas du bassin d'Alès

Abstract : The old city centers of small villages are facing many issues which dealt by the local actors (private or public). While metropolises struggle with social housing, many small cities are trying to improve their image, in order to attract new inhabitants in their centers. The heart of these cities with an industrial, commercial or agricultural past has difficulty in retrieving the functions and the services necessary to keep their inhabitants. Those cities are, in many cases, poorer than the average. Indeed, the richest individuals prefers the outside of the village than its center. This tendency tends to increase the old centers difficulties which used to be prosperous. The assumption is that the 'rural revival' (has Kayser mentioned it in 1990) has to go through city centers renovation as well as the city outskirts expansion.
