Le français et le shimaoré à Mayotte : influences réciproques

Abstract : This thesis deals with contacts between languages in a multilingual environment, and specifically in Mayotte. It aims at analyzing the reciprocal influences between a native language, Shimaore, and a second language, French, in oral and written practices. In concrete terms, the purpose of this thesis is to study the morphosyntactic, semantic, phonetic and phonological aspects of Mahoraisian words inserted in discourses in French and vice-versa. It also aims at conducting a comparative study in order to identify generalities and specificities of oral and written communication. Since we hypothesized that linguistic coexistence between Shimaore and French generates reciprocal oral and written transfers, we have, on the one hand, recorded spontaneous speech of 10 speakers living in Mayotte, and on the other hand, collected around 15,000 comments from 425 writers within the social network Facebook. Data were analyzed using the concept of matrix language and embedded language (Myers-Scotton, 1993) and the pragmatic approach by Auer (1995) in order to identify the functions of Shimaore-French code-switching. Our results have revealed the presence of Mahorisms, Gallicisms and the use of a “language of interaction” (Auer, 1998), the “Shimahozungu”. Corpus examination has notably revealed the existence of a “francized Shimaore” and of a “shimaorized French”. Considering mixed practices of speakers, we establish a typology of borrowing and code-switching occurrences (intrasentential, intersentential).
