Contribution à l'analyse des facteurs influents du processus de charge triboélectrique des matériaux granulaires

Abstract : When two materials are rubbed against each other, or simply brought into contact, they acquire electric charges of opposite signs. This charge acquisition mechanism, called triboelectricity, is the basis of the working principle of the electrostatic separators for granular mixtures of insulating materials. This thesis is aimed at evaluating the effects of geometric factors (size of the granules), surface condition (roughness and wettability) and chemical composition (presence of brominated flame retardants) on the triboelectric charging of plastic particles originated from waste electrical and electronic equipment.The parametric study of these factors was then used as a basis for optimizing the triboelectric charging conditions and improving the efficiency of the electrostatic separation. Particle size reduction, as well as the use of shredding as a simultaneous operation of grinding and triboelectric charging, enhanced the feasibility of the electrostatic separation of granular polymers.A surface pretreatment by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) proved to be effective on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation of such materials. An experimental bench for the surface treatment of granular materials by dynamic DBD was designed and built, in order to integrate this technology into an industrial process. The work carried out in this thesis has also confirmed the feasibility of triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation of granular mixtures of brominated and non-brominated polymers.
