La fuite et l’expulsion dans le cinéma de langue allemande (1946-2018) : représentations, rôles et fonctions

Abstract : Since the middle of the 20th century, cinema, all genres combined, has played a major role in the representation of the past. More than any other medium, it writes history, creates myths and shapes collective memories over the course of eras and political regimes. This comparative and diachronic study of a corpus of German-language films depicting or evoking the flight and expulsion of Germans at the end of the Second World War identifies and highlights their roles and functions within the different societies concerned: zones of occupation, East and West Germany, reunified Germany and Austria. The analysis, structured in three parts, begins by examining the history of emotions, demonstrating the contribution of cinema to the development of resilience among expellees. Turning then to the theme of historiography, this study notes the ongoing importance of integration, or even assimilation, and underlines the complexity of the interactions with the National Socialist past as well as with contemporary socio-political developments in the realisation of the works. Moreover, it reveals that the ideological differences between the two Germanies, which are obvious on the screen, do not however prevent convergences in the representations and objectives pursued. The third part deals with identities, looking in particular at the origins, language practices and gender of the expellees on the screen. It ends with the facets of flight and expulsion that are deliberately ignored, the absence of which is also significant. In the end, it turns out that cinema is a precious witness to the relationship a society has with its past.
