Métaphore et pensée dans l'oeuvre de Victor Hugo (1852-1864)

Abstract : This thesis studies how Hugo uses metaphor to write his thought, in several works of his first twelve years of exile, in prose or verse, all belonging to different literary genres : Napoléon le Petit (1852), Châtiments (1853), Les Contemplations (1856), the First Series of La Légende des siècles (1859), Les Misérables (1862), William Shakespeare (1864) and the « proses philosophiques » of the years 1860-1864. Hugo's thought about metaphor is first studied, a thought that concerns four fields at least : rhetoric, anthropology, psychology and metaphysics. Then the thesis shows how metaphor enables Hugo to think, express his thought and make it convincing. Metaphorical reformulation, evolution and variation play a part in speech organisation and progression. Some arguments or argumentative strategies are metaphorical, and even beyond that, many images convey intrinsic argumentation. Metaphor is helpful as a way of modelling - providing a representation or even an explanation of an object, modelled on another object ; metaphor can also enable a phenomenological approach of some things ; metaphorical modelling is often overwhelmed by the emotional, imaginary, oneiric force of the image. Thus metaphor doesn't only help the writing of Hugo's thought but carries it away, turns it into something new : metaphor poeticises philosophical prose, introduces fiction and narrative in it, mixes, displaces or rethinks literary genres. It also enables Hugo to inject his own thought into quotations, historical and literary knowledge, myths and Christian theological ideas - thus synthesising in his work the great « human book » and letting shine all the light it can contain.
