The integration of the amazonian area to the Peruvian nation-state : mutual representations Iquitos-Lima (1883-1934)
L'intégration de l'espace amazonien à l'Etat-nation péruvien : représentations réciproques Iquitos-Lima (1883-1934)

The present work analyzes representations of the Peruvian Amazonian area in Lima and representations of the Peruvian capital as seen from Amazonia, with a focus on Iquitos, Loreto’s main city since 1897 (north-east of the country). The study spans from the country’s reconstruction after the Pacific War (1879-1883) to the Rio de Janeiro Protocol (1934), which ended the conflict between Peru and Colombia. The territorialization of the Peruvian Amazonian area was then initiated as part of the construction of the Peruvian nation-state. This process is examined through mutual representations thanks to the analysis of varied sources, mainly maps, pictures, essays, monographs and newspapers. Over time reciprocity in representations developed, getting more precise and revealing an important gap between Amazonian realities and what was thought and imagined in Lima, where a lot of prejudice, stereotypes or myths prevailed. The analysis of the sources highlights the irregular rhythm of this region’s integration in terms of territorial, administrative, economic, legal and cultural aspects. Each sector progressed on its own schedule and integration was still an ungoing process in most sectors by 1934. Our point is to insist on the agency of Iquitos and in fine of the north-east Amazonian area in the process. That active interplay oscillated between an identification to national news (as much as possible) and symbols and challenges to prejudices and measures – considered inappropriate – decided from the remote capital. Both testify to a same ongoing issue: the misreading of Amazonian realities.
La présente thèse a pour objectif d’analyser les représentations de l’espace amazonien dans la capitale péruvienne et celles de Lima en Amazonie, en particulier à Iquitos, capitale du Loreto à partir de 1897 (nord-est du pays). La période retenue est celle qui s’étend de la reconstruction du pays, après la Guerre du Pacifique (1879-1883) jusqu’à la signature du Protocole de Rio de Janeiro (1934) qui met un terme au conflit entre le Pérou et la Colombie. La territorialisation de l’espace amazonien est alors engagée dans le cadre de la construction de l’État-nation péruvien. Ce processus est étudié ici au prisme des représentations réciproques à travers l’analyse de sources variées, essentiellement cartographiques, iconographiques, narratives et journalistiques. Est mis au jour un décalage important entre les réalités du Loreto et ce qui est pensé et imaginé à Lima, dont ne sont pas absents préjugés, stéréotypes et mythes. L’analyse des sources fait apparaître le rythme inégal de l’intégration de cette région sur le plan territorial, administratif, économique, légal et culturel. Chaque domaine révèle un calendrier propre et l’intégration demeure inachevée, dans la majeure partie des aspects cités, en 1934. Notre intérêt a été d’insister sur le statut d’ « acteur » d’Iquitos et in fine de l’espace amazonien nord-oriental dans ce processus, entre identification aux actualités nationales et aux symboles péruviens et remise en question des préjugés et des mesures – jugées inadaptées – prises depuis une capitale éloignée. Elles résultent et témoignent d’un problème qui perdure : la méconnaissance des réalités amazoniennes.
