Abstract : This thesis analyses the ways, means and consequences of the mobilization of men in the most active part of the masculinist movement, the separated and divorced fathers’ rights movement. This work is based on a qualitative investigation made of 24 in-depth semi-conducted interviews with activist and beneficiaries from 7 associations, and 32 observations of support groups in 3 of them. Enriched by numerous written sources produced by the movement itself, this makes possible to study the discourse the associations create and spread so as to understand its argumentative structure, and its effect on the individual and collective practices and subjectivity of fathers. Firstly, I study the French fathers’ rights movement’s current structuring in a cartography, insisting on its particularities in the social movement’s space and the international space. Demands and repertoire of contention are studied in relation to their role in the social production of the “separated fathers” group. Secondly, I analyze the movement’s argumentative structure, insisting on the material effects and consequences the advice given to the beneficiaries by the activist have, as well as the reach the analysis and demands have. The discriminations the fathers from these groups condemn reveal their attachment to the dominant social position they have and embody in sex social relations. Thirdly, I study the movement’s role in producing and strengthening of fathers’ dominant subjectivity and I show how this movement encourages men to conceal male dominant consciousness. This thesis articulate social movement theory to dominant group sociology and sex social relations studies in a materialist feminist analysis.
