Un outil didactique et numérique pour apprendre l’orthographe au cycle 3 : des décalages d’appropriations entre élèves et enseignant(e)s

Abstract : Faced with the difficulty of teaching and learning French spelling, teachers have designed the Twictée pedagogical scenario, which consists of primary and middle school classes exchanging dictated sentences called "twictées", and then also tools for correcting the dictations received, called "twoutils". Spelling is an issue of social importance in France, but there is a lack of research on the value of digital technology for the development of spelling skills; the Twictée to Learn Spelling project therefore studies this didactic proposal. Anchored in this project, our study examines the appropriation of the "twoutil" tool in five grades 4 to 6 classes, with particular attention paid to students with spelling difficulties. We trace the extent of convergence between the appropriation of this digital didactic tool by students and by their teachers. By means of interviews, questionnaires and filmed verbal interactions, we put students’ and teachers’ perceptions of the tool, as well as their activity, into dialogue. Our analyses reveal discrepancies and misunderstandings - particularly marked when it comes to students with spelling difficulties. Indeed, there are discrepancies between teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the motivation generated by the tool and of its difficulty. There is also a "didactic" misunderstanding between the teachers' reflexive objectives and the students' activity, which we shed light on through the teachers' activity. On the basis of these results, we suggest didactic proposals to foster learning for all students and for teachers’ training, and engage a reflection on how to model the appropriation of such a digital didactic tool.
