Migrations des jeunes d’origine équatorienne de l’Espagne à Londres : des expériences aux ancrages

Abstract : Based on the study of the onward migration of a young population, this thesis proposes to develop a social geography of migrations and experiences and to discuss the migration-anchoring nexus. It analyses the reconfigurations of several forms of anchorage within a transnational triangle composed of three places: Ecuador, Spain and London. At a time of growth and diversification of forms of mobility, this thesis studies the migration flow between Spain and London of young people from Ecuadorian origins who benefit from their European citizenship to move easily around Europe. At the beginning of the 2000s, Spain experienced a massive flow of Ecuadorian immigration, which quickly became a family migration. An important second generation of Ecuadorian migrants grew up in the host country, integrated into the country and obtained Spanish nationality. Since the Spanish economic crisis of 2008, part of this population has been migrating to new poles within a multipolar Ecuadorian migration field, especially in the United Kingdom.Focusing more specifically on youth migration, this thesis proposes a reflection on this transitional period in the life cycle and looks at the temporalities of migratory experiences. It highlights the impact of age in migration, on the relationship to space and de facto on the renegotiation of anchors and identity constructions. It questions the inflexions and evolutions of migratory projects and trajectories, following migration in a global city, in which migrants are integrated into a segmented and precarious labour market. Furthermore, it situates young migrants within broader relational structures. The thesis jointly analyses the individual and collective dimensions that shape the migration process. It focuses on migrant networks and the role of the family, which is one of the most important factors in the mobility of young people, even those who wish to emancipate themselves from parental care. The analyses presented in this thesis are based on fieldwork carried out in London and Madrid, and on the monitoring of migrants' digital social networks. The multi-sited survey allowed to diversify the encounters with a small sample of young people of Ecuadorian origin who migrated to London before the age of 30, It also shed light on their practices, their aspirations, and their representations on the spaces of migration, as children of migrants and young people.
