P. Lemar and F. , We compare these diagnosed KE fields with those observed in the OGCM, that is, KE g-o and KE igw-o (with subscript o for observed), in Figures 3a and 3c, respectively (see also Figures S2 and S3). KE g-o and KE igw-o are estimated from u(x,y) and v(x,y) using high-pass and low-pass filters involving K ?1 i . Comparison between Figures 3a and 3b indicates a strong similarity between KE g-o and KE g-d . For the Kuroshio Extension, the mean value for KE g-d is close to 0.056 m 2 /s 2 , consistent with KE g-o value, 0.055 m 2 /s 2 . Similar results are found for other regions. The KE g-o and KE g-d fields display smooth patterns intensified on the eddy edges (identified by SSH contours). Peaks in the KE g-d field are at the same location as those in the KE g-o field, with the same intensity, This similitude is, vol.9
