Dire l'interdit. Les stratégies littéraires face à la censure dans le roman polonais et tchèque (1968-1976)

Abstract : In 1968, the repressive maneuvers of the Czech and Polish regimes precipitated the rupture between the literary intelligentsia and the communist executives. By the same time, the censorial institution had modernized its operations to make it incumbent to the authors to restrain their own writings. The short decade that ranges from 1968 to the re-establishment of a network of clandestine printing and distribution of literary writings, around 1976, is therefore rich in official publications displaying a paroxysmal tension between the desire to denounce and the impossibility of doing so. This tension gave way to a variety of literary strategies for coping with censorship. This thesis intends to compile a reasoned catalog of them and to reconstruct the historical sequence of their respective uses; and this in order to demonstrate that the succession of these strategies was part of a larger reflexion as to the obstacle, as well as the artistic opportunity, that censorship presented for writing. Thus, the comparative analysis of the novels of Šotola, Kramer, Veis, Hrabal, Andrzejewski, Bocheński, Lem and Brandys reveals four types of writing, ranging from redemptive excess to the staging of the impotence of the artist, through the manufacture of eloquent silences or the use of carefully calibrated allusions.
