Development of variational models and algorithmic strategies for coupled problems

Abstract : A modeling approach and numericalsolution techniques for coupled problems are proposed based on variational principles. The modeling is based on a variational approach used in specific types of coupled problems. The proposed model is generalized for coupled problems independently of the types of physics on which they are based. Different numerical solution strategies are derived from the proposed variational models. These strategies can be linked to empirical strategies such as « global/local" and/or « staggered" approaches. The proposed models and the resolution techniques are presented for different 1D examples. The generalized model is used in electrochemistry and a variational model for a lithium-ion battery is derived. The variational framework is also used to compare different existing models for the battery electrolyte.
