Caractérisation et modélisation des interactions au sein d'un assemblage de cyanobactéries diazotrophes et de microalgues

Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to investigate and to optimize the interactions within Dunaliella salina, a microalga of economic interest, and the N2-fixing cyanobacteria Crocosphaera watsonii. Similarly to terrestrial plants, co-culturing microalgae together with diazotrophs would indeed reduce the need of nitrogen fertilizer inputs. A first set of experiments compares D. salina and C. watsonii physiologies when mono- and co-cultured to understand the impact of interactions on the ecosystem dynamics. A strong light competition and an allelopathic effect are both detected. Results are then extrapolated using a theoretical modelling approach. Competition for light is shown to be counter-productive for the ecosystem, even when the bacteria recycle diazotroph derived nitrogen. A second set of experiments is conducted in contactless systems to avoid light competition. The mathematical model allows us to determine the interactions associated with this artificial assemblage.This thesis shows the importance of coupling experimental and modelling approaches to further understand the network of interactions within the ecosystem. Our results highlight encouraging perspectives for industrial development of co-cultures in an objective of sustainable development.
