L’Espace des désirs : enquête sur la construction des homosexualités masculines en Chine post-maoïste

Abstract : First widely erased from the Chinese public space at the end of the singular history of the meanings invested in homosexuality, but also in love and sex in general, during the successive efforts to "modernize" the country, the forms of same-sex desire and love in China meet new possibilities of expression from the turn of the 1980s in a context of economic liberalization and opening up to international trade under the sign of "modernization ". Based on a study conducted over six years in the gay male worlds of three mainland Chinese cities, the thesis takes as its starting point the resulting association, in both ordinary and scholarly discourse, between homosexuality and supposedly modern subjects: young, from the new middle and globalized classes. First, it highlights the existence of distinct configurations of male homosexuality in post-Mao China, whose socio-cultural forms differ according to their more or less central or peripheral position in a simultaneously social, geographic, symbolic and trans/national space in rapid transformation. It then shows more generally how all the dimensions of what can be called erotic taste - how, what and who do we like, what does it mean, how do we learn it and where does it come from - develop and articulate in a differentiated way in the Chinese space of homosexuality, and are constitutive of the social, economic and political processes which characterize reform and opening up China. The thesis ultimately leads to a shift of perspective, from the contextualization of sex to the enlightening of context, which implies, rather than looking for “Chinese” or “globalized” cultural traits in Chinese homosexuality, to understand the transformations of China, as of globalization, through their sexual width.
