Etude expérimentale et numérique du comportement en suspension de particules de silice amphotères

Abstract : This study is about the synthesis of amphoteric silica particles and the study of their behaviour in suspension, experimentally and numerically. It presents a thorough study for the synthesis of these particles, with adjustable patch size, using the Pickering emulsion method. Particles are partially modified with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), in order to obtain different surface charges depending on the pH (positive/negative, neutral/negative or negative/negative). These particles are fluorescent so that they can be observed, as well as their assemblies, by confocal microscopy. Their aggregation at different pH is also studied by means of Brownian dynamics simulations, using the DLVO theory. Simulations are compared to experimental observations, in order to validate these new models, and get a better understanding of the aggregation process of asymmetric particles. A good agreement between experimental and numerical characterizations was obtained.
